The Prostate Page

Where is it and what is it ?

The male Prostate is an organ, part muscle - part gland, situated directly below the bladder. It completely encircles the top section of the narrow urethral channel - the tube by which urine leaves the bladder.

The easiest way to visualise the Prostate is to imagine a doughnut with a tube through the centre. In an adult male the size of the prostate is as big as a walnut.

The muscular function, co-ordinated with muscles in the bladder, opens and closes the tube through which urine is released from the bladder into the penis. It also helps shut off urine at the bladder during sexual arousal to allow the release of semen.
